Today, let’s talk about Types of B/L. Before that, let’s overview the basic role of B/L.B/L is an important document in International Logistics, and importer must obtain B/L for picking up cargo.

As representation divides in B/L, Electronics B/L, Surrendered B/L
As Consignee of B/L divides in Order B/L, Straight B/L, Open B/L
As Issuer of B/L divides in Master B/L, House B/L
Let’s specify the details of following types.
Firstly, Order B/L. Order B/L is issued to the order of a shipper or consignee for delivery of the goods and that can be transferred by endorsement to third parties. It’s usually used under L/C payment term.
Next, Surrendered B/L. Surrendered B/L is commercially referred to as Surrender. Surrendered B/L is featured as “Speed”and “Copy is acceptable”. It will solve the difficulty that marine transport take only 3 to 4 days to get to near countries’ports.
Finally, House B/L. HBL is issued by a freight forwarder or a non-vessel operating company (NVOCC) to a shipper to acknowledge receipt of their items for shipment. In other words, it’s a receipt for the goods. Its disadvantages include it will charge extra fees at destination port when exchange Master B/L.
Each of these B/Ls has its own characteristics. Therefore, cargo owner should pay attention to the preparation and use of ocean bills of lading when shipping.
